Steve Fisher: Black BookReviewsThe scenery is breathtaking and the skill of Steve Fisher and friends is amazing. You immediately find yourself drawn into the thrill of the run and find your heart racing as the kayakers approach every drop. The film is well organized and flows as well as the rivers they run. Also it gives a fascinating look into the life of an extreme kayaker. We enjoyed every minute of it. Average Rating:![]() |

Into the Tsangpo GorgeReviewsI've always been fascinated by the attempts to explore the Tsangpo Gorge, starting with F M Bailey's book, No passport to Tibet which I picked up many years ago. When I read Ian Baker's The Heart of the World: A Journey to Tibet's Lost Paradiseabout his attempts to penetrate into the heart of the Tsangpo, I was equally enthralled. From Baker's book, I was lead to Peter Heller's story, Hell or High Water: Surviving Tibet's Tsangpo Riverof this expedition to kayak down the Tsangpo. I actually bought and watched this movie as a result of reading Heller's book, and after watching the movie, where there was no mention or inclusion of footage of Heller at all, I appreciated Heller's candour about the disagreements/conflict between himself and expedition organiser Scott Lundgren even more. That said, I enjoyed this movie tremendously. The extreme whitewater footage was simply awesome - my whitewater experience is pretty basic but even I could appreciate the sheer complexity and power of the Tsangpo that these guys faced. As another reviewer mentioned, the whitewater pushes the definition of extreme paddling to new limits. The setting for the movie is incredible - sheer gorges, Himalayan peaks, almost impenetratable terrain, the sheer brute force of the Tsangpo as it cuts its way between the peaks of the Himalaya and forces its way down to the Indian plains. The filming is excellent - the guys did a great job shooting this under such extreme conditions and it really captures the intensity of the experience and the challenges that the team faced. They also captured the challenges faced by the support party trekking down the sides of the gorge to support the kayakers. Having trekked and done a bit of basic climbing in the Himalaya's, I can truely appreciate what they faced and the film pretty much does it justice. The narration is pretty good overall, does a good job explainingg what the team is doing, what they face, how they handled it and how they felt. That said, Heller's book DOES come in handy in conjunction with this movie as it gives a much more detailed account of the support party's efforts than the film provides. It also provides a lot more description around the kayakers themselves, the preparations, the challenges the kayakers faced and what everyone went through than the film can convey. My recommendation is simply that this is a great extreme whitewater kayaking movie, well worth watching if you like this kind of thing, either as a participant or as an armchair adventurer. And Heller's book is a great accompaniment to the film. An all star team of the best kayakers in the world tackle a portion of the great canyon of the Tsangpo river, in a very remote corner of Tibet. This canyon has been the focus of many legends, and the whitewater pushes the definition of extreme paddling to new limits. The narration could have been a bit better, but the cinematography is excellent, and I found the film very enjoyable. The setting is truly remarkable, and the film makers have provided a brilliant view from the comfort of our armchairs. Dancing on the Edge of an Endangered Planet A lousy view of possibly the wildest, most beautiful, and most dangerous, remote places on Earth. There is no evidence of passion in this short film, which totally fails to give a sense of people or of place. Viewing the area on Google Earth and reading accounts of people who have tried the gorge are much more enlightening than this overpriced "little" video. I, however, do salute the guys for being there though. I read about this expedition in Outside Magazine when it happened, but did not fully explore the tale until I stumbled across Peter Heller's "Hell or High Water" a year or two later. While the filmmakers brilliantly capture the awesome fury of the river and the incredible intensity of the kayakers' running it for the first time, it lacks the storyline needed to fully understand the history of the Tsangpo and the complexity of the planning and executing such a trip. That's where Heller's book comes in handy, even if it provides a far more detailed account of the ground party's trek through the gorge than it does about the kayakers plunge down the river. It is well known that Heller's ambitions were cut short by the expedition leader, Lundgren, who foolishly feared that a bestselling book would steal his thunder and thus kept Heller off the river and at an arm's length from the paddlers. While Heller has the maturity to discuss this conflict in his book (and agreed to share 10% of his book royalties w/ the kayakers), Lundgren simply omits Heller from the expedition film completely, a move which struck me -- having read the book -- as both petty and arrogant. By sabotaging Heller's efforts, Lundgren effectively chews off his own foot, minimizing what could have proven to be an incredible PR effort for the expedition and this video (case in point, after reading Krakauer's Into Thin Air, I was compelled to purchase Brashear's film Everest, even though the two are not directly related). Personally, I would never have bought this video had I not read Heller's book. Tis a shame when egos get in the way of shared success, as was the case in the telling of this tale. This could have been a great film AND and a great book. Instead, each is marginalized by the limited success of the other, thus relegating both to sidelines of adventure tales. As an intermediate paddler, this vid caused my jaw to drop. Stunning scenery. Amazing logistics. Incredible paddlers. Fascinating. I watch it over and over again. Puts the Grand Canyon, Alsek, and Stikine to shame. Average Rating:![]() |

Butterfly Senshu Table Tennis RacketReviewsI just got this paddle, and I find that it has immediately improved my game overall. I ordered this paddle in hopes that it would improve my game, especially my spin; to my satisfaction, it has greatly increased the amount of spin I put on the ball so that instead of just missing the edge of the table, I can pin the ball right on the edge. This paddle is, in my opinion, ideal for the player who spins the ball most of the time when he plays. In terms of control, I find this paddle very good as well; however, I can only use it for control and defense if I put some form of spin on the ball. For those who prefer to play defensively and just let the ball bounce of the paddle, this racket's power will send it flying so long as there is no spin on the ball. The only problem with this paddle, as everyone else has identified, is the extremely weak and fragile rubber. One accidental hit of the rim of the paddle on the table or any other hard surface, and this rubber will inevitably rip. So long as you keep care not to hit it against any surfaces, though, the rubber will be fine, and even upon ripping the edges, it has no effect on your game. Besides this one flaw, I love this paddle, and I would recommend it to anyone who primarily spins the ball. I really like this bat, everyone does. but I really do believe the rubber is really easy to tear as I see a lots of missing bit at the side. First off this paddle is delivered in a box just telling everyone because that one review saying it didn't come in one. Well me and my friend wanted to step our game up from these really bad rubber paddles we got at dick's sporting goods so we looked online and thought the senshu would be great for us. When we got it on my front porch and opened it we were so excited. The rubber is very tacky and lint and dust easily gets caught on it so make sure to wipe it down with a damp sponge but not too damp. Get this paddle if you feel like you need much more spin on your serves or top spin drives. Be ready though because this thing is so hard to control at first. When me and my friend were serving it to each other the spin was magnified. If it was a side spin it would shoot across after hitting the paddle but we got use to the spin and learned soon how to counter it in a hour or too. So buy this paddle if you're wanting to improve your control very much~ Love this paddle I was recently borrowing a friend's Kenji racket, I loved it but I was still kinda off on my smashes. I tried to get the Kenji on Amazon but it was sold out. But after reviewing other paddles I think with the stats on the Senshu it would be good for me and I was totally right. I had it for 3 days and it took me a day to adjust. It is heavier than the Kenji. 90% of my smashes are landing now and I haven't lost yet out of 40 games. The people I played against usually win 50/50 of the games we play, but now, they are trying real hard to win. Oh, the control on this paddle is really hard but its coming. some of the games I allow people to smash so I can practice control. But overall I'm on top of my game with this paddle. I love it. I'm no pro at table tennis but I wanted a better paddle to advance my game. I love this paddle. Average Rating:![]() |

Butterfly Victory 4-Player Table Tennis SetReviewsLooked great initially: 4 pingpong paddles and a bunch of balls. The edges of the paddles have been cracking even with just ordinary use. I don't think there will be a problem using them, but they look worn after only a few months' use. Butterfly racquets are among the best that I have used, and a 4 player kit for this price seemed like an unbeatable deal. The racquets are pretty good quality ones, but certainly not tournament standard. My main complaint is against the balls included. While they claim to be 3star quality, they break pretty easily along the joins. Our games involve lot of smashing, and we ran through 3 balls in a single session. Had to invest in a box of Stag balls that seems to hold up a lot better. For casual play, I would recommend this kit, especially if you play a lot of doubles. I have 3 kids now each of them have a racket now. They can play together very goog. High quality and good price. This actually turned out to be a great purchase. For the price, you get 4 paddles and enough balls to last a while. Everything is great quality and you won't be disappointed. If you're looking for a set, this is the one. super value product and good quality racqeuts. I own several brands of racquets. buterfly is the best Average Rating:![]() |

Butterfly Shikata Table Tennis RacketReviewsI bought the Shikata ping-pong paddle to use for an intermediate ping-pong class and it functioned quite well as referenced by Amazon reviews here. The wooden handle has a nice aesthetic touch to it because of the unique Shikata design and head is a standard size which fits my manly hands perfectly. The paddle itself is not too heavy and not too light which provided an even balance for me and allowed me access to a higher level of maneuverability at the table with an equal amount of power when I instantly will it. Hits: My top-spin heavy shots were more precise and aggressive to a point where I could achieve these shots naturally and at ease. How profound! Slices were very easy to control as well. Side spin serves were absolutely amazing and my serves were noticeably improved on a large scale. I wouldn't say this is particularly an improvement paddle because that would do it no justice. The paddle is actually very capable and can be quite aggressive for competitive games. Minor Gripe? I have one and it's clean your paddle with the cleaner solution or your shots will go out more frequently. Nonetheless, this applies to all Butterfly rubber-paddles. The Shikata is easy to clean. My friend had a Butterfly Asassim paddle with a much thicker amount of rubber layer. I think it belongs in the pro's paddle category but I found it unnecessarily heavy although the execution of loop shots were amazing. It was also much more expensive which I didn't prefer. The Shikata however, fitted all of my preference & budget so after a day of reviewing other Butterfly paddles I went with the Shikata. The Shikata is a great paddle for intermediate and advanced level players and is well worth the $45 spent! It been 24 years since I last played, I may say I am an intermediate back then. I was using paddles provided by the sports house then and now. A friend convinced me to get me a paddle to grow with the sport. I like the review of Naifu, Kyoshi, Shikata and Shensu. Budget wise Naifu would be good but to grow Shensu is the paddle. I like to grow on a a budget so I chose Kyoshi but was out of stock so Shikata for a litte bit more. Also bought Naifu for my son who i am teaching now. Shikata is a very good racket. I can return and hit balls at will. Blocks pretty well too. After a week with the paddle i think i need to create my own paddle. One thing i did not like is that the Shikata that was sent to my was an old stock. Comparing it to the Naifu I got my son, his Naifu is shiny and the Shikata is dry, no glow at all. When i put back my son's Naifu original protective plastic covering it sticked to the paddle, when i put the Shikata's original protective plastic covering it did not stick at all. That is why i give it 4 stars, someone said to put lamp oil. Overall Shikata is a fine pre-assembled racket. This is a very good paddle for someone who wants to move up from the cheap sportscraft "contender" models. It is very good at all distances and gives you a good idea of whether you want to be an aggressive or defensive player. It is also a very sturdy paddle. If you keep it clean and try not to cut it into the table the rubber will last a good length of time. I have been playing with it for over a month now and still all the rubber is completely sealed around the edges. Overall, its a really good paddle and if you are just starting to play more on the competitive side this would be a good choice. This paddle is great for anyone who wants to step up there table tennis skill level, and doesn't want to go through the whole 'build your own' paddle scenario. Highly Recommend it! This paddle was a great addition to my ping pong family. A little on the high side for pricing, this paddle is not for anyone who doesn't incorporate a large amount of spin into their play. My loops have never been more effective. Definitely a racket worth looking at. Average Rating:![]() |

Wii Table Paddle SetReviewsThe problem with these paddles is that you cannot use the Wii motion plus with them. I purchased them to play the table tennis game on Wii Resort. There is a package that I ended up buying that has 2 paddles, 2 swords, bat and a golf club that is for the Wii Resort and allows attachment of the Wii motion plus. The paddles themselves have a realistic weight and shape. However while using the paddle with the Wii controller one does not have easy access to the controls. I chose to use this paddle set with the game Rockstar Table Tennis Rockstar Presents Table Tennis and movements necessary to control your characters do not always mimic the actual movements you would make in a ping pong game. The product was attractive but alas, the paddles will remain in their box and not in use. Average Rating:![]() |
